Phase 1: Collection
In MATTIS, the first phase is all about the build-up. You aren't trying to get rid of cards yet—you're building the hand you'll use to win later.
Players lay cards one by one. The highest rank "owns" the pile until someone beats it. If you match a rank already on the table, you trigger a "War" where the winner takes everything.
